There's a video floating around the internet that I cannot stop thinking about. A Russian soldier, helmet, full kit, the whole thing, is running across an open field in Ukraine. He's zigzagging. He knows something is following him. The camera is the drone. You watch it chase him down.

I'm not going to tell you how it ends.

What I will tell you is that the drone following him probably cost around $400. It was assembled from hobbyist racing quadcopter parts, the kind you can order online. The kind teenagers use to film skateboarding videos. And it is now the most feared weapon on one of the largest active battlefields on earth.

This is what war looks like now.

Before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine had fewer than ten companies producing drones, mostly for crop surveillance and agriculture. By early 2025, there were over 200 registered manufacturers, with some estimates putting the real number above 500, including volunteer workshops and garage operations that were just building the things and handing them to soldiers. Ukraine went from farming drones to a wartime drone economy in about three years and is now on pace to produce 4.5 million FPV attack drones in 2025 alone.

That number is hard to hold in your head. So is this one: a NATO official confirmed that FPV drones costing under $1,000 had destroyed two-thirds of Russia's tanks. Two thirds. Of the tanks. With drones you could buy the components for on Amazon.

The math is not subtle. An FPV drone costing $300 to $600 can destroy a Russian tank worth $1 to $4 million. Even if most of them miss, and many do, to jamming and electronic warfare, the exchange rate still crushes whoever's on the expensive side of it. You can afford to lose a hundred $400 drones for every $2 million tank you take out and still be way ahead. Ukraine figured this out. Now everyone has.

The tank, for most of the 20th century the symbol of ground dominance , the thing that ended World War II, the thing that defined the Cold War, the thing that made Desert Storm look like a highlight reel, is now essentially a slow-moving target with a bullseye painted on it. Russia lost almost its entire stockpile of modern and antiquated vehicles, estimated at 10,000 tanks and 22,000 armored troop carriers. To replace them, Russian commanders are sending their soldiers into battle on motorcycles. And golf carts. Actual Chinese-made golf carts, the DesertCross 1000, a vehicle designed for hauling mulch and keeping park rangers comfortable, now carrying Russian assault troops across minefields toward Ukrainian lines because at least they're small enough that a drone might miss.

The most desperate regiments have even equipped their reconnaissance and assault troops with rechargeable electric scooters, the kind a Russian pedestrian can rent for a few rubles for his commute to work in Saint Petersburg.

There's something almost darkly funny about that. A nuclear-armed superpower, one of the largest military forces on earth, sending men into battle on rental scooters because the alternative, an armored vehicle, is too easy to kill. That's not a quirk of this war. That's the lesson of this war.

And the lesson is traveling.

North Korea has been watching Ukraine very closely, and Kim Jong Un did not become interested in cheap drones by accident. In November 2024 he ordered North Korea to step up production of its own suicide drones. This from a regime that has spent decades and incalculable resources building nuclear weapons as its ultimate deterrent. Now it's building drone factories.

Satellite imagery confirmed it. In July 2024, construction began to redevelop a large portion of the Panghyon Aircraft Factory, several buildings demolished, new ones going up, including a fabrication hall 225 meters long. You don't build a 225-meter fabrication hall because you're dabbling.

North Korea sent roughly 11,000 troops to fight alongside Russia in the Kursk region, and those soldiers got an education they couldn't have bought anywhere else. They showed up fighting like it was 1950, massed infantry charges, no drone awareness, no electronic warfare instincts. They got slaughtered. Drone footage of North Korean soldiers trying to hide from Ukrainian FPVs by lying flat on open ground, pressing themselves against tree trunks in the dark, spread across the internet. It looked like men fighting technology from a different century, because it was.

Then they adapted. "They went from using World War II tactics to managing on the battlefield with drones," a Ukrainian commander told NPR. "And they learned very quickly." Soldiers were found with hand-drawn diagrams in their notebooks, not of artillery formations or trench layouts, but of drone counter-tactics. Bait-and-kill systems. How to use one soldier as decoy while two others wait in cover.

The tuition for that education was paid in blood. The curriculum is now going home.

Russia agreed to help North Korea build its own drone industry, technical assistance, manufacturing knowledge, the whole thing, in exchange for the troops and ammunition Pyongyang had been shipping east. North Korea dispatched a delegation of aviation officials to a drone training center at Moscow State Technical University. Ukraine's intelligence service reported that North Korea was planning to send 12,000 workers to Russia's Alabuga Special Economic Zone, a known production hub for the Shahed kamikaze drones that have been hitting Ukrainian cities for years. They're not just learning how to use drones. They're learning how to build them at scale.

Kim Jong Un called drone production a "top priority" and said drones were "achieving clear successes in big and small conflicts" and that their proliferation "urgently calls for updating many parts of military theory." That's a dictator quoting lessons learned from a war he wasn't officially fighting in. He sent his men there precisely to learn those lessons, and they did.

The thing that keeps striking me about all of this is how fast it happened, and how grassroots it started.

Ukraine's drone program didn't begin with a defense ministry contract or a Pentagon equivalent signing off on a procurement plan. It started with volunteers. People who built racing drones as a hobby looking at the war and thinking: I can duct-tape a grenade to this. The first documented FPV drone strike in Ukraine was carried out by a volunteer unit called Signum, a video they titled "Blue Doors." That was 2022. By 2023, FPV drones were standard issue across the Ukrainian military. By 2025, drones were accounting for 60 to 70 percent of all damage done to Russian equipment, according to the Royal United Services Institute.

The US military's equivalent drone at the time, the Switchblade-300, cost more than 100 times what a Ukrainian FPV cost. Ukraine eventually built a fully domestic version, zero Chinese parts, that came in cheaper than the version with Chinese components. The thing that's supposed to cost more when you localize production cost less. That is the opposite of every assumption the defense industry runs on.

Every military on earth is now running the same math Ukraine ran in 2022. Taiwan is building mass-produced drones for a potential conflict with China. Europe's Defence Readiness Roadmap has drones at the center of it. South Korea, which shares a border with the country that just spent a year learning drone warfare the hard way, is scrambling. The US launched something called the Gauntlet program trying to recreate Ukraine's iterative, kill-or-be-killed drone selection process in a controlled setting, because there's no better testing environment than a real war.

The $400 drone didn't just kill a tank. It killed an entire theory of warfare, the one where the side with the most expensive hardware wins, where military power scales with GDP, where the gap between a superpower and a smaller nation is just about money. That gap still exists. But it got a lot narrower the day someone figured out a hobbyist racing drone with a warhead attached could take out a vehicle that costs 5,000 times more than it does.

War is becoming defined less by the cost of what you destroy, and more by how quickly you can adapt to destroying it.
